In Today Already Walks Tomorrow
‘I Will Write Peace on Your Wings and You Will Fly All over the World’ is the 7 minute opener that sets the tone. It starts ballsy, heavy and fiery and you could be forgiven for thinking that the song/album will continue in this nature, but after only 1:30 minutes or so, the whole tempo and ethos changes to what could be an entirely different song altogether. It’s at that point when you start to think there’s something a little different and special about these guys.
The songs continue in much the same vein, being rich in tranquillity, fluctuating between painful and joyous memories that wouldn’t be out of place on a movie soundtrack such is its theatrical and cinematic quality. ‘It’s Dark, It’s Cold, It’s Winter’ is probably the most moving piece, conjuring images of stillness in a snow ridden landscape laden with trees - a kind of innocence to its gentle tone that’s befitting of the word ‘poignant’.
To date Sleepmakeswakes have released this EP in 2008, and one full length studio album ( ...and so we destroyed everything in 2011), but it’s in this particular album, along with a string of vibrant live performances that has earned them immediate global recognition, which has led to a series of high profile support slots (toured with 65daysofstatic), festival appearances such as SXSW in 2012, and a European tour in 2012. In Today Already Walks Tomorrow has been touted as one of the most impressive debuts of the modern post rock era, and it’s hard to disagree with that as it’s a vivid album that seems to fit perfectly in any background you wish. The worldwide release of In Today Already Walks Tomorrow includes a deluxe edition of the album, including the remix album, as well as the band's first ever vinyl release, and is available now.
