Heading into Super Bowl XLVIII, the Denver Broncos are the highest scoring offense in the history of the NFL. But what are some of the biggest scoring numbers produced by teams in past NFL championships? Here are the top 5 highest scoring teams in Super Bowl history.

5. Super Bowl XX
Super Bowl XX pitted the legendary 1985 Chicago Bears defense against an unlikely New England Patriots team. The Bears held the Patriots to a Super Bowl record 123 yards from scrimmage en route to a commanding 46-10 victory. Richard Dent was named MVP with 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a blocked pass.
4. Super Bowl XXXVII
In 2003 the Tampa Bay Buccaneers played in their first championship game against the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII. Much like this years NFL championship, Super Bowl XXXVII saw the number one defense in Tampa Bay against the number one offense in Oakland. Tampa Bay’s defense dominated the game as they recorded a Super Bowl record five interceptions. Tampa Bay won their first Lombardi Trophy by a score of 48-21. Dexter Jackson, who caught two interceptions, earned Super Bowl MVP honors.
3. Super Bowl XXIX
In 1995, Super Bowl XXIX pitted the San Francisco 49ers against the San Diego Chargers. This is the game where 49ers quarterback, Steve Young, was finally able to step out of the shadow of his predecessor, Joe Montana. In a high-scoring battle, the 49ers would eventually prove victorious with a final score of 49-26. Steve young threw 325 yards and a Super Bowl record six touchdowns. Young was also the leading rusher in the game with 49 yards, he was named MVP of Super Bowl XXIX. The combined score of 75 points in Super Bowl XXIX is an NFL record to this day.
2. Super Bowl XXVII
The second highest scoring team in Super Bowl history came in 1992 at Super Bowl XXVII, with the Dallas Cowboys facing off against the Buffalo Bills. The Cowboys forced a Super Bowl record nine turnovers, which led to 35 points. The Cowboys demolished the Bills by a score of 52-17. Dallas would have had one more touchdown and been number one on this list, if not for a Don Beebe strip of Leon Lett at the one yard line. Nonetheless, the Cowboys sit as the number two scoring team in Super Bowl history. Troy Aikman earned MVP honors with 273 yards passing, four touchdowns and a passer rating of 140.6. The Bills loss marked the first time in NFL history that a team lost in three consecutive Super Bowls. They would add a fourth consecutive loss at Super Bowl XXVIII against the Cowboys the following year.

The number one scoring team in Super Bowl history is the San Francisco 49ers. In Super Bowl XXIV, the San Francisco 49ers faced off against the Denver Broncos to determine the champion of the 1989 NFL season. Super Bowl XXIV is the most lopsided victory in the history of the NFL championship. The 49ers outscored the Broncos by 45, with a final score of 55-10. Joe Montana earned his fourth Vince Lombardi trophy and his third Super Bowl MVP award. Montana threw for 297
yards and five touchdowns.
While Super Bowl XXLVIII  championship battle may not be added to this list of five, one of the highest scoring teams in the history of the league will be showcased on the NFL’s biggest stage.
