Actor Ben Affleck, who is set to be Batman in the upcoming Batman Vs Supermanmovie, has been banned for life from playing blackjack at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas for allegedly counting cards this past Tuesday, but does he simply possess a brilliant gambling mind? He was in Sin City with is wife, actress Jennifer Garner, on what was presumably meant to be a romantic getaway before filming begins in Detroit for the Batman Vs Superman movie.
Ben Affleck was not “booted” from the casino, and there is no proof that he was counting cards by any mechanical means. As a member of the casino’s security team reportedly told him, he was just “too good,” at playing blackjack, and he was subsequently banned for life from playing blackjack at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
Ben Affleck possesses a brilliant gambling mind
As no mechanical devices or aids were found on Ben Affleck to help him count cards, perhaps he merely possesses a brilliant gambling mind, and his uncanny memory for what cards had already been played helped him have a hot streak that was a bit too hot for the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino to handle.
Ben Affleck is definitely not an amateur when it comes to gambling, and his exploits at the blackjack table began years ago, before he got married to Jennifer Garner. In fact, in 2001, Affleck played three hands of blackjack at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, betting $20,000 on each hand. The future Bruce Wayne/Batman won the three hands of blackjack, and walked away with $800,000. Not a bad haul, even for a millionaire playboy.
The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, to their credit, did not treat Ben Affleck like apersona non gratis after the incident, but still like the Oscar winner and VIP that he is. Affleck was informed that he could play the other games at the casino. The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino even provided for an automobile to transport Affleck and his wife to the hotel.
While counting cards in not technically illegal in Las Vegas, according to TMZ, it is not something that casinos endorse,to put it lightly. If a person is caught counting cards, he or she will likely be escorted out of the casino and banned from playing cards there, similar to what happened in the case of Ben Affleck. Counting cards becomes illegal, according to a representative of the Nevada Gaming Control Board, James Taylor, in an interview with E! News, when there is either a device used or information is being passed between players through the use of signals or signs. There is no law or regulation against having a “brilliant mind.”
According to the site Radar Online, up to a week earlier an internal email about Ben Affleck and his “obvious” card counting tactic of moving money with the count, was sent out by the Wynn and Encore casinos’ Games Protection Manager to most of the casinos in the Las Vegas area. Reportedly, Ben Affleck liked to spread up to $100,000 on blackjack games involving double decks.
Besides this recent incident this past Tuesday, when Ben Affleck got banned for life from playing blackjack at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, the actor was also named in a 2011 lawsuit brought by Howard M. Ehrenberg, the trustee for Ruderrman Capital Partners, against actor Tobey Maguire, for allegedly being a member of an underground gambling ring involving Hollywood A-listers. Whatever Ben Affleck’s involvement might or might not have been in the alleged Hollywood gambling ring, the actor definitely has a very good memory and a brilliant mind — one that got him banned for allegedly counting cards in Sin City at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
