Elderly Texas Woman Shot to Death by Police Officer

An elderly Texas woman, age 93, was shot and killed by a police officer in the rural town of Hearne, stated authorities. Neighbors stated that Pearlie Golden was a very nice woman who was known to the majority of people around the small community as “Miss Sully”.
The woman ended up being shot five times, stated several different witnesses. However Hearne police declined to give any comments to the media about specifics to what happened on Tuesday night around the shooting in the town which a population of less than 5,000 people. It is located around 150 miles to the south of Dallas.
A female who would only identify herself only as Dispatcher Murphy stated that she could not tell anyone anything about the shooting. In a one-paragraph news release that was distributed by the police department on Wednesday, stated that police officers answered a nine-one-one call that involved “a female with a gun”. The press release added that shots were fired and the female was sent to a nearby hospital. The officer that was involved in the shooting had been suspended at the present time with pay.
County representatives named the police official as Officer Stephen Stem and declared that he had fired his weapon after he told Golden to put the gun down she was waving around.
District Attorney Coty Siegert explained that at the present time it was too early in the investigation to comment on anything that had happened, but he could say that what happened was an extremely tragic occurrence. He stated that his prayers were going out to the family of Miss Golden and to the whole Hearne community.
Many of the town residents are questioning why a police officer would end up shooting an elderly woman. One citizen wondered why if Golden even did have a gun, she was in her 90’s, so how come the police did not shoot in the air to scare her?
A group of residents have planned a candlelight vigil for this evening at 7:00 p.m. in front of Golden’s house. Hearne Police, Texas Rangers and the Robertson County District Attorney’s Office are all involved in the investigation. The case will in due course be taken to a Texas grand jury.
This is actually the second time Stem has found himself in the middle of a deadly shooting incident. He joined the Hearne Police Department on July 22, 2012. It was less than six months later when he shot and killed Tederalle Satchell. Police stated that Satchell had been shooting from an automobile in a parking lot. A grand jury cleared Stem of any wrong doing.
The Hearne City Council has decided to have a special session for Saturday. Council members will talk about disciplinary measures for Stem, which may include termination.
